The month of May has been a roller coaster for some Pittsburgh Pirates prospects, and today we will be taking a look at some of the bright spots across the organization.
LHP Anthony Solometo
The #10 ranked prospect in the Pirates organization continues to make leaps and bounds to continue to grow his stock. His month of May was absolutely incredible for High-A Greensboro. He pitched 27 and two thirds innings, striking out 31 batters, walking 11, and having a monthly earned runs allowed at 1.95. If Solometo continues at this pace, he should be headed up to AA Altoona especially after another dominant pitcher was added to the Hoppers rotation today.
RHP Thomas Harrington
Harrington has been on fire for the Low-A Bradenton Marauders all season long, which helped him earn his promotion to Greensboro on June 1st. Harrington is the Pirates #12 ranked prospect, and that looks to continue to grow. He had 8 starts with Bradenton, earning victories in 4 of those matches, striking out 40 batters in 39 innings along with an ERA of 2.77. At 21 years old, Harrington is moving through the system fairly quickly, and it would not be surprising to see him in central PA by the end of 2023.
RHP Jared Jones
We have talked about the tenth and twelfth best prospects in the organization, but coincidentally we are gonna talk about the eleventh ranked too, Jared Jones. Despite not having a win to his name, Jones has been dominant on the mound, striking out 33 batters over his 28 and a third innings pitched with a ERA of 2.54. Jones only gave up 4 runs in May in his 14 and two thirds inning pitched which is pure dominance. Assuming when Solometo gets the call to Altoona, Jones should be headed to AAA Indianapolis along with possibly the next promoted player.
RHP Kyle Nicholas
He was one of the main pieces in the Jacob Stallings trade from Miami, and last year he showed some flashes of dominance, but this year he has turned on a switch to make that 1-2 punch with Jones in the Altoona rotation one to be reckon with. In the month of May, he pitched 28 innings allowing 14 runs which is decent, but the eye popping stat is the 40 strikeouts which earned 2 wins. Nicolas looks to be promoted soon.
INF Tsung-Che Cheng
Cheng finally cracked the top 30 prospects coming into 2023 after having a very underrated 2022 with Bradenton. Cheng really seemed to adapt to High-A Greensboro in the month of May, hitting for a .308 average, 12 RBIs, and 3 home runs. Cheng has been a steady everyday player for the Hoppers, usually hitting 2nd in the lineup. He seems to just be in the words of Moneyball, “He just gets on base”, and well that .432 OPS for the month of May says just that.
Let me know what you guys think of these 5 prospects and how they did this May and if I missed anyone in my prospects of the month!
